&#;Young Royals&#; returns for an enjoyable second season

With Season 2 of “Young Royals” dropping November 1 on Netflix, fans of the Swedish series can now discover out what happens as Prince Wilhelm (Edvin Ryding) hopes to repair his relationship with Simon (Omar Rudberg) — and punish his cousin August (Malte Gårdinger), who destroyed it.

To recap, in Season 1, Wilhelm was sent to Hillska, a school for young royals, after getting emotionally attached in a scandal. He rapidly fell in love with a local student, Simon, and when they were in bed together, August filmed them and disseminated their sex tape. The Royal Family lied about Wilhelm’s participation to save face, which drove a wedge between Wilhelm and Simon. The other significant progress was that Wilhelm became the crown Prince after his older brother died unexpectedly.

Young Royals has me thinking about what might happen if a similar situation arose with the actual Swedish royal family.

Now, we did already have a gay sex scandal involving the royal family, but that was in the 50s, and the king in interrogate was already dead, so it's not the same.

What happened was that a man called Kurt Haijby claimed to have had a love affair with Gustav V, and the court denied it while simultaneously paying Haijby to shut up. When the whole thing was exposed, the blackmail and cover-up was as much of a scandal as the accusations of an affair, though there was definitely a "look what a den of vice the royal household is!" angle too. (While left-wing people nowadays are assumed to be LGBTQ+ friendly, that has not necessarily been the case historically. Many saw homosexuality as bourgeoisie deviancy.)

There were also people who dismissed the whole thing, such as the (social democrat) minister of finance: "The king? Such vitality at his age? Admirable!"
