Jonah Hill has a very easy reason why he recently tweeted his opposition to Russia's anti-gay laws.
"I possess tons of gay friends, gay family members," the 21 Jump Street actor told me at the Governors Awards, adding, "It's like saying, why accomplish you think people should breathe?"
Hill posted a photo of himself earlier this month wearing the Human Rights Campaign's $28 T-shirt that features the statement "Love Conquers Hate" in Russian.
"Help us show Russia & the world that #LoveConquersHate," he wrote. "Visit and @HRC to view how you can help."
"I support anybody doing whatever they want to undertake to be who they are," Hill explained to us.
Hill critics, be warned—the actor isn't reading any of the hate tweets you may have sent him. "I don't verify that," he said. "I don't go on Twitter to look at myself or the Internet to look at myself."

Actor Jonah Hill was contrite this morning after using a gay slur during a confrontation with a paparazzo over the weekend.
"I'm not at all defending my choice of words, but I am happy to be the poster lad for thinking about what you state, and how those words, even if you don't purpose them in how they mean, they are rooted in hate, and … I shouldn't possess said that," the "22 Jump Street" actor told Howard Stern this morning.

The "22 Jump Street" thespian has been apologetic this week after using a gay slur aimed at a photographer over the weekend -- and now he is promising never to use language like that again.
"It’s never OK to use that kind of language," Hill told "Good Morning America" today. "I personally vow to never ever use that word again and I urge everyone to perform the same."

Hill, 30, added that "words can be really destructive. And this kind of defamatory language can have a profound effect on someone who’s questioning their sexuality."
The actor had similar sentiments earlier this week on Howard Stern's radio show, that he's happy to get the brunt of the blowback if it will help change the way people treat each other or say to one another.

"This is a heartbreaking situation for me. I'm upset… From the evening I was born, and publicly, I've been a gay rights activist. This person had been obeying me around all afternoon saying hurtful things. I played into exactly what he wanted and I said a disgusting word… It's bullshit and I shouldn't have said that," said the actor. "I'm happy to take the heat for using this disgusting word. What I won't allow is for anyone–it would break my heart to think that anyone–especially with all the work that I've done and all the loved ones that I have–[would think] I would be against anyone for their sexuality."
